Don't Bash the President

Our country is in turmoil. The unemployment rate is high, folks have lost their homes, many are struggling to make ends meet. President Barack Obama inherited America's problems when he became the leader of our country (He didn't create them, remember?). Over the last year and a half, the President has worked to fix a lot of our mess. Passing the health care bill was a huge step in the right direction. If you don't agree with health care reform, then you've never been in a place where someone you love, or yourself, was very sick and could not get help because you didn't have health insurance. He's also helped create thousands of jobs with the stimulus program. And our country is turning around.(I don't care if you agree with these statements or not).

I didn't vote for President Obama...I didn't even like him while he was running. But I do think he's doing pretty good with what he was given. And no I'm not a democrat. I'm an independent, who votes for the right candidate, not a party. I say all of this because we are in the midst of another election period right now. And it appalls me that there are candidates using their platform to bash the President. We should be voting for candidates who are willing to work together with the President to make a better America...not for those who want to work against him in everything he does. I don't care who the President is! He deserves respect!

There is a candidate in Tennessee running for Congress. Her name is Robin Smith, and her ad simply says "vote for me and I will work against the president". Click here to see ad. How is that helping America? Americans voted President Obama into office and he deserves a chance to turn things around.

A Georgia candidate for Congress, Jody Hice, used a hammer and sickle symbol on a billboard, which is the symbol for communism, when referring to the President. This is NOT acceptable.

If you vote for either of these candidates, or any other candidate that talks about going against the President on everything, then this country will remain the place it is today--people without work, wall street falling apart, foreclosures at an all-time high. You need to vote for people who are willing to work together to make this country the great place we know it can be. And that doesn't mean always agreeing with President Obama. It means talking things through and coming to decisions together, as a team. Please vote wisely this year. It could mean a better America, or the worse you've ever seen.

The world is always better with friends

Today, I learned a big lesson. I can't do life without friends. Today, severe pain shot through my leg...so bad I nearly passed out. I struggled to get to my phone. But with a call, I had a friend coming to pick me up to take me to the emergency room. She was only able to stay a couple hours, but a little while later, another friend came to the ER, sat with me, then brought me to her house to spend the night. What would I have done without these wonderful ladies? I've lived without local friends before, but today I learned I never want to do life alone again. Turns out I have a pulled hamstring. I'm now on some powerful pain killers. THank you, Lord, for blessing me with people like Dawn and Stephanie...

Thank You!!!!

It always amazes me when people tell me they read my blog. I mean, these are just my thoughts and ramblings that sometimes I just have to talk about. This is a great outlet for me. Over the last week, I have gotten 3 comments, saying they read my blog! And just in the last couple of weeks, my known followers increased from 2 to 7! It's amazing. I just want to say "Thank You" for reading! If you read and haven't become a follower of my page, please do so! I love to see who is reading! And I will try to be better about updating more often!

Going with your gut

The coolest thing happened this week. I was just sitting there, minding my own business, and out of the blue, a manager at a news station out west emailed me asking if I were interested in coming to work. Now, before that email, I hadn't even thought about moving. I hadn't sent any resumes, so it was just out of the blue! Undoubtedly one of my co-workers had dropped my name in conversation with someone else (Thanks, by the way...huge compliment!) Once I got that email, for a few days, my world turned upside down. The what-if's started going through my head, and the more I thought about it, the more it sounded like a wonderful adventure I wanted to be a part of.

Right now, thought, the timing is off. I am so close to family right now, and my grandmother is battling cancer. I just didn't feel right going so far away from her. Plus, I've started over every two years...just got to wondering if I wanted to do that again right now. Usually I have a few months to prepare for it, but this time, it was just dropped in my lap. I also like the people I work with...and that's a rare gem, I have learned!

So, after lots and lots of thought and prayer, I am going with my gut feeling, and staying in Chattanooga. I am hoping that my decision pays off. I am also hoping that this manager will remember me if ever a position opens back up and he needs a news producer.

I have begun to review books, and I just finished my first on the list. Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a copy of "The Witness" by Josh McDowell, for my review. It was a very different book from the genre that I usually read, but I couldn't put it down. I read it in four days, only reluctantly putting it down to sleep or to work. The book is a murder/suspense novel. It begins with a crazy scene of murder, that you might only find in a movie. The lead character, Marwin Accad, is forced into hiding, and into running from city to city, because not only are assassins after him, but so are the police. But you learn, not only is he running from those who are after him, he is running from God. The funny thing is, God starts showing up in the oddest places, showing Marwin that he can't do it alone.

I do have to say, I didn't care for how the book ends. It leaves you with many questions as to what may have happened next. I would have liked the author to wrap it up a bit better. But overall, a very good book. Would love to see a sequel to "The Witness

LOST Explained--This is my take

Okay, so the island was real. That was all of their real experiences. But the life this season was showing as if the plane didn't crash was the characters in a holding place--what some would think of as purgatory. They have to go there until they can remember what happened to them and how they died. Some died earlier, and some later. But all had to come into play as each character remembered. When JAck finally remembered what had happened to him, he got to go to heaven. The others are left up to interpretation, but I believe some of them were already in heaven--the ones who had already remembered. They were just helping the others get there.
Benjamin Linus had sinned, so he had some stuff to work out before he could go, that is why he didn't go in the church...and if you noticed, Michael wasn't there either. He was stuck on the island...he was the whispers you could here sometimes.

Loved the ending...Jack died exactly how and where he woke up on the island the very first episode...In the bamboo forest, he woke up one eye opened...he died one eye closed. Nice touch adding vincent the dog (Walt's dog) to make sure JAck wasn't alone when he died.

That seems to be a resounding theme throughout LOST...that you can't do life alone. You need people to do life with you. My favorite quote of this finale: Christian Shephard to Jack: The most important part of your life was the time you spent with these people. That's why all of you are here. Nobody does it alone, Jack. You needed all of them, and they needed you. Jack: For what? Christian: To remember., and to let go.

And last week a very similar quote by Jacob to Jack: Jacob: "I didn't pluck any of you out of a happy existence. You were all flawed. I chose you because you were all like me. You were all alone. You were all looking for something you couldn't find out there. I chose you because you needed this place as much as it needed you."

All of them were trying to do life alone and on their own.--and they were terribly unhappy. The island, as bad as it was, helped them really live and love.

Jack, who had always kinda been in the shadow of his father, took charge on the island...and he became the symbol of all that was good--to fight off evil(the black smoke and the man in black who had taken over John Locke's body)...and good always wins in the end. He had to learn how to defeat evil--and he did...the island itself was keeping the evil invincible.

Now that I understand what actually happened, I loved the finale. I want to go back and watch it again. No, I don't believe in pergutory--but I think this worked in this show...which was all make-believe, anyway.

Cruise to the Bahamas

Valerie and I just got home from a cruise to the Bahamas...and I wrote down a summary of each day...thought you might enjoy reading about it!

4/17/10
Val and I left Chattanooga at 3am to drive to Jacksonville. When we got to the terminal, we felt like we were being herded like cattle...one linie after another--five lines before we were able to board. Then we couldn't get into our stateroom until 1:30. I had so many carry-ons! We had lunch on the Lido deck, then at 1:30, we went to our room for a nap. We figured the cruise didn't really start until 4 anyway, and we were tired! At four, we went to a required safety meeting where were were taught where to go if the ship is sinking, how to put on a life jacket, and where our rafts are located. I don't know about you, but if the boat is sinking, I'm getting my life vest and heading straight to the raft--not the muster station!

We watched the boat set sail, then were entered to win free spa stuff...didn't win, but it was still fun. We explored a bit, went to dinner, where I ate a wonderful tomato soup, a cesar salad, chicken pasta, and Chocolate Melting Cake (yum!). THen Val went to bed. I went to the opening show--a comedy show and dancing, then I explored a bit...Went to the casino and lost $20...Got in bed around 12:30am.

The First day of the cruise I had a tough time with sea sickness. Wasn't nauseaus, but I was dizzy. You could really feel the boat rocking.

Fun day at sea! Woke up at 9a, to find Valerie had been up and already been to the gym for a workout! The beds were so comfy! WE had breakfast delivered to our stateroom, then headed to the pool for a fun-filled day in the sun. One problem: There was no sun! It was overcast-and cold! So we laid out by the pool until lunch, then ate caribbean food in the coconut grill. It was delicioius! We went back to the pool, long enough to watch the "Hairy Chest Competition". It was so funny! Then we went to a dance class. Valerie decided to watch, and she took plenty of pictures of me dancing the salsa! WEnt to a shopping seminar, then to our rooms to ready for formal ight. Got all dressed up--ate stuffed mushrooms, strawberry bisque, lobster tail and shrimp, with a baked potato and a cherry dessert. WE got our pictures taklen several times--there were some really pretty ones, but we didn't buy them. Then we went to the show--all about 80s music, clothes, and hair! Then we went to bed--Half Moon Cay tomorrow!

Hmm...How do I describe this day? Absolutely Marvelous! Today, Val and I got up at 7am. WE got ready, ate breakfast on the Lido deck--eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, toast, bagels, and orage juice. And by 8:30am, we were on the tender boat, and on our way to Half Moon Cay. It is so beautiful! The water looks like a swimming pool. IT's aqua blue and you can see everything! IT's amazing! You get 20 feet deep and you can still see the bottom clearly. And the water is very salty--burns your eyes so bad, and it doesn't taste very good, either! The sand throughout the island is fune, soft sand that feels wonderful to your feet! We started our day on the island by getting on another boat and heading snorkeling. We went way off the island to a reef, and I saw lots of beautiful fish--blue, yellow, multicolor--we also saw different types of coral--one lady says she saw a sea turtle! It took a few minutes to figure out snorkeling. I had a hard time breathing and getting used to the waves. But once I got it, I had a great time! We also met Alex and Emily during this trip--friends for the rest of the cruise. After snorkeling, we came back to the island and laid on the beach for hours! We ate lunch, then went back to the beach. We were on the island, in the sun, for 8 hours--and you could look at me and tell! I was so red, despite wearing spf30 sunblock all day!
That evening I attended another dance class--this time it was disco dancing...saw Alex and emily there. THen we went to bed.

4/20/10
we woke up this morning and we were in Nassau! My first impression was how wonderful it was. But then we got off the boat! THere were all types of people, harrassing cruisers, trying to sell tours, taxis, scooters, and anything else you can think of. BUt we got away from the terminal and all was right with the world again.
We went to all kinds of stores, and the famous straw market. The straw market held beautiful hats and handbags, all woven by those selling them. One lady even let me take her picture while she worked. We ate lunch on the ship, then went back out. We rode a Jitney(bus) to cable beach and that was quite the experience! You almost have to have a death wish! But we made it in one piece, and it only cost $1.25 each way! The water at cable beach wasn't as nice as what we saw at Half MOon Cay. There was lots of seaweed. We didn't stay long. We went back downtown and shopped more. Then we went to the Queen's Staircase and met a guy who gave us a tour of sorts. He told us the history of the Queen's staircase. It has 65 steps--one for each year Queen Victoria reigned. We also learned that Bahamians were slaves to England. And when slavery was abolished, the Queen gave the slaves the islands and helped them make lives for themselves. All children learn christianity in school...and they even have a hotel/tourism class, since that's their main industry. The tour guy also showed us Fort Fincastle and a beautiful view. We then went back to the boat--man, was I tired! WE got back around 6, so it was a 10 hour day and my feet hurt so bad!

We went to dinner and sat in Putu and Ntando's section for a third night. I ordered Lobster Bisque and fried shrimp and grouper with a marmalade sauce. Then, we went to a juggling show and comedy act...so funny! I laughed so hard, I hurt!

As I went to join the deck party, it started raining. But it didn't last long. THere was a live band...so fun... I danced the electric slide, the macarena, the YMCA, the Chicken Dance, and any other group dance you can think of. Valerie didn't go with me to the party...she went to bed early. I made it to sleep about midnight.

4/21/10

Today is the last day of the cruise. I'm sad it's over, but so glad I got the opportunity to come! We had so much fun! This day, I was so tired I didn't wake up til about 9:30. We went and ate breakfast, then we had to go to a mandatory embarkation meeting, where Trevor, our cruise director, explained the provess for getting off the boat. Then it was time for some fun in the sun. WE headed out to the Lido deck and grabbed a couple of lawn chairs. OUr chairs were close to the stage, and that was wonderful! We got to hear the band playu and see all the entertainment. We played a game of tv theme song trivia, we watched a man carve a sculpture out of ice, and all kinds of stuff. I was in and out of the pool a couple of times--which by the way was salt water! WE ate lunch about 1:30--mongolian food--it was wonderful! THen at 2:15, it was time for the country line dancing class! Alex and emily were there again. I got their information so we can stay in touch on facebook. Then I went back out for more fun in the sun. Valerie decided to go shopping. WE met back in the room about 5p and then headed to the farewell party. There was music, dancing, and free drinks. Then we got ready for dinner. It was our last night with Putu and Ntando. Sad. I got mushroom creme soup, crab cake, and shrimp, scallop, and callamari pasta. I picked out the calamari(yuck). But the food was great...and for dessert? Chocolate melting cake, of course! THe show tonight was called "Mambo" then back to our rooms to pack and back to the Palace theatre for another comedfy show. WE were in bed around midnight.

The next morning, we got in the car and headed home. Vacation is over, but the memories will last a lifetime.

The Tortoise and the Hare

I wrote this for an assignment, but I still wanted to share...I believe it's very true:

We all know the children’s fable about the tortoise and the hare. We learn at the end “slow and steady wins the race.” In life, many of us feel like we’re in a race. It’s the race called life. Some are looking to get to the top of the ladder before someone else does. Others are just working toward a goal they set for themselves.
I think people can be compared to the tortoise and the hare. Some people are tortoises. These people work hard, they don’t cut corners, and they keep on moving until they get to their goals in life. Sometimes it doesn’t happen as quickly as one would like. There are hills to climb, and obstacles to overcome. But tortoises keep putting one foot in front of the other, looking toward the finish line.
There are others, however, who are hares. Hares work towards the goal for a while, but then they forget what they’re trying to accomplish. They lose sight of the goal, the finish line. They say to themselves, “I’m not in a hurry. I’ve got plenty of time.” Then time runs out.
As Christians, our goal should be to live for the Lord and serve Him. Our ultimate goal is Heaven. In Philippians 3:14, Paul writes, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” So, make goals, and keep working toward them. You will be rewarded.

Rain, Wash My Sorrows Away

Tonight, it's raining. It's been raining all day. The weather--it seems to match my mood. Just as the sky seems to be crying, so are my heart and soul.
I have deep secrets, that only God and the walls of my bedroom know. I cry out to God frequently, asking Him for answers.

All day at work today, I've struggled. I'm so tired, and that alone makes me emotional. I laid in bed until noon today, because my body just seems like it had no energy. I just wanted to keep my eyes shut and forget about the day ahead. But I have to work. So I went. But the only good things that came out of the day were that I actually got to take an hour for lunch. I went alone, which was probably a good thing, considering my bad mood. The second good thing? That my show was flawless.

Then I got in the car, and before I could even get out of the parking lot, I was sobbing. I put in a worship c-d, third day...and the song "Give Me a Revelation" started through the speakers of the car. And I just started crying out to God, my creator. Just crying out to Him, asking him to help me have the desires of my heart.
Then when I got home, I stood out in the rain, hoping it could wash my sorrows away.

The song "give me a revelation" by third day is exactly how I feel right now. I need a revelation. I feel like I'm alone, I'm broken...but I'm trying to find my way. Many times, though, I feel so lost. It's like I wrote this song, cause the whole song is EXACTLY how I feel.

When I was a kid, and my mom was making me do something I didn't want to do, I would say, "But that's not fair." She would always reply, "Life's not fair." I never realized the truth in that statement, until recently. Life's Not Fair!

Please pray for me, as I try and do this thing we call "Life".
JESUS--I need you more than ever right now. I've got nothing without you.

I Miss You, My Dear Brother

Today it has been 13 years since you went home to Jesus. It seems like a lifetime ago, but at the same time, it seems like it was just yesterday. You've been on my mind a lot, lately. You've been in my dreams. In some of those dreams, we're still teenagers.. But in some of those dreams, I've been blessed with sort of a glimpse of you...who you might be now. I cherish those dreams. God blessed me with the best brother a girl could have. Even though you were my little brother, you always acted so protective like a big brother. We shared lots of laughs and many sorrows. Sometimes I still wish I could just head to your room and talk about our day...about the struggles, about the joys...we used to to that all the time. I don't know why you were taken from this world at the young age of 15. But I do know I am proud to have known you...proud to have called you my brother. I miss you, Robbie. I still hold you in my heart.

Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot?

Tomorrow is the last day of 2009...the last day of an entire decade. That's hard to comprehend. Just thinking back on the last 10 years...

In 2000, I was a college student. Just a few months before, I had transferred to the University of South Alabama to finish my bachelors of arts degree in Communication. It's hard to think of myself as that 20 year old that was just getting started in adulthood. There's so much I didn't know--yet I thought I knew it all. I had my future mapped out...I was going to get a job in Television as a reporter, get married, and have a couple of kids. I was ready to conquer the world! I didn't care about the fear I felt about the future, because I was ready to stare that fear in the face.

I liked the 20 year old "me". As we get older, we decide to get comfortable in the day to day, mundane life. Here I am, just turned 31, and no, I don't like where I'm at. But it's hard for me to think of doing or being anything other than what I am...a tv news producer at work, single in my personal life. But if I've learned anything over the last 10 years, I've learned that things can change in an instant. One moment, you think, "wow, I need a change!" and the next minute, something just kind of falls in your lap, or something changes that pushes you to make that change.

In college, I thought I had it all figured out...and I wasn't going to let anyone squash my dreams. Those ney-sayers...you know, the ones that say "It can't be done", I was all about proving them wrong.

I grew up in a very small Alabama town. And undoubtedly, small town girls aren't supposed to do anything big. Or at least what small minds consider big. Because when I decided I wanted to work in television news, I had teachers, even my guidance counselor tell me it couldn't be done. Which is kind of odd, considering the whole reason I got interested in TV to start with was because of a class that was offered one year at Gordo High School. A class that I was put into by chance. I am so glad it happened. But those teachers, they all told me I shouldn't go away to college--because small town girls don't do well in college, unless they go to the local community college first. And they tried to talk me out of working in television, too. So, much of this decade has been about proving them wrong. And I did! I've seen some of them in my hometown since graduation, and they get a weird look on their face when I tell them what I do for a living.

But you know, I'm tired of living my life to prove someone else wrong. Beginning in 2010, I'm going to live for me and for me only. I'm going to do what makes me happy. I just have to figure out what does make me happy and do it.

Since college graduation(2002), I have lived in Mobile, Alabama, Huntsville, Alabama, Pensacola, Florida, Greenville, South Carolina, and now Chattanooga, Tennessee. For the most part, I didn't move just to move. I moved in order to get to my dream. I wanted to be a news producer of a 5pm newscast(somewhere along the way, my dream of being a reporter changed). And that required moving around in order to move up. I never got much attached to the places I lived. I had friends everywhere I lived, even in Pensacola, which is surprising, since I was only there for three months (I told you life can change quickly!) But when I got to Greenville, suddenly all of that changed. I made a life for myself there. I had friends, a boyfriend, a great church, and a great-paying job. I had actually decided to stay, but then work got more than I could handle, and suddenly happiness at work was more important than the money I was making.

So I moved to Chattanooga...which not only fulfilled my dream of becoming a 5pm producer, but gave me a great city to live in...Now here, I have good friends, a wonderful church...and a job where I'm treated well, which is nice. But I'm not satisfied. So, over the next couple of months, I will be analyzing my life, and try to figure out how I can get satisfied. A friend of mine recently commented on one of my posts. She told me that she is happy to see me so content in life, because so many of her single friends are not. The truth is, I try hard to be content, but that isn't always the case. I do want that companionship that only a husband can give. I think any single woman who says she doesn't want that is lying. But I know that this is the life I have right now, and I will never get it back, so I need to enjoy what God has given me.

With that said, I am so happy that my life's journey has included all of the wonderful people that I've had the privilege of knowing. People I would never have met had I not chosen the path I did. People in all sorts of cities across the country and the world. The famous song Auld Lang Syne talks about friends of times past.
it's literal translation is this:
Should old friends be forgotten
and never remembered
Should old friends be forgotten
and the days they shared together

I believe old friends should never be forgotten, because those friends are who have made us the people we are today. I believe God brings people into your life for a reason, for a season, or for a lifetime. And I can look back over the many friends I have made on this life's journey...over the past decade, and see many faces. Some of them I never talk to anymore...they were only my friends for a season. But they had their purpose. And I am so glad that many of the friends I have made are here for a lifetime. Many of you reading this fit that category.

So no, old acquaintance should not be forgot. Thank you for doing life's journey with me. Here's to a great New Year and a New Decade! Cheers!

The Magic of Christmas

This is my first year on facebook, and i have been saddened reading about how children are either being told Santa Claus isn't real, or they're beginning to question the legend of Santa Claus at earlier ages. I think the latter is being caused by the former. First of all, Santa is based on a real person...

Saint Nicholas was born to wealthy christian parents in the third century. His parents died while he was still very young. Obeying Jesus' words to sell all you have and give the money to the poor, Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. Saint Nicholas is known as the patron and protector of children.

Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of St. Nicholas' life and deeds.
One story tells of a poor man who had three daughters. In those days, a father had to offer his daughter's prospective husband a dowry. Without a dowry, a woman was unlikely to marry...and without dowry's, these young women were likely to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, a bag of gold appeared in their home, on three different occasions--which provided the needed dowries. the bags were tossed through an open window and are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left by the fire to dry. That's where we get the custom of hanging stockings at Christmastime.

Saint Nicholas died December 6th, which is why many celebrate St. Nicholas day on that day each year. During my time as a part-time nanny for a German family in Mobile, Alabama, I learned about the tradition of Saint Nicholas day--it's one I would like to keep with my future children. Kids put their shoes outside the door while they sleep on December 6th. During the night, Nicholas comes and fills their shoes...candy if they were good, rocks if they were bad...one of my kids that I kept got rocks in one shoe and candy in the other one year! I guess he was half good/half bad! :)

As christians, we all know the true reason for the season. Jesus. But Jesus if about a gift. God gave Jesus to the world so that we could know Him and spend eternity with Him. And because I am a christian, and I love Jesus, I believe Christmas is about giving...whether it be a gift of love or of a toy. And Santa fits right into that category...

plus...What's childhood without a bit of make believe and magic? I have to commend my parents, Bob and Regina, were all about the magic of Christmas. This is the truth! I believed in Santa Claus until I was a teenager! Yes, you probably think i'm a dork...But everytime I started to doubt, something would happen on Christmas eve! One year I heard elves run down the hallway! I'm not kidding! It sounded like little people, and lots of them, running! Then one year, I heard reindeer on the roof! If that's not enough to make you believe, I don't know what is! And one year...on Christmas Day, we found sleigh marks in the yard! It was amazing!

But of course, we always had the nativity in the house--and always talked about JEsus and the gift He gave us!

I say all of this to say--enjoy the magic of Christmas! And let your children enjoy it, too! Because, we only get one childhood! And if you have the imagination and the means...make this Christmas a little more magical for them. And for yourself!

I can only hope somewhere a child is hearing reindeer on the roof, or bells, or even elves in the hallway. :)

12 Days of Christmas

You know the song...but exactly how did the 12 Days of Christmas become a popular song? I mean, it is a little strange...who gives lords a leaping and ladies dancing to the ones they love? I might understand the five gold rings, though!

But I came across something very interesting today. An explainer on how the song was written, and it's quite fascinating:


From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics..

It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.

-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

-The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

So there is your history lesson of the day...next time you sing the catchy song, maybe you'll think about how the true meaning has deep roots in the Bible.

It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

It's been a while since I posted. And I really don't have any excuses. I just spend WAY too much time on facebook to keep up with my blog. But we're entering the holiday season. And this can be the most wonderful time of the year, or it can be the most stressful time of the year.

I love the holidays--the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. And for the first time in a long time, I get to see my family on Thanksgiving AND Christmas. Working in news, someone has to work. And I've always had to work either Thanksgiving or Christmas. But this year, I get the day after Thanksgiving off, and I get Christmas Day off. Yes, I have to work Thanksgiving day and Christmas eve...but I'll take what I can get!

Because I usually have to work holidays, December is many times a very sad time for me. Because while everyone is enjoying their family, I don't get to see them because of work. So, this year is extra special.

The holidays are about family and friends, and Jesus. And for people who don't get to see their family, this time of year can be stressful. Sometimes, being around that family can be stressful!

This Thanksgiving, what are you thankful for? I am thankful I have a roof over my head, food to eat, and a job that pays the bills. THere's so many this thanksgiving that don't have that. Someone sent a news release to me last week that said one in six Tennesseans will go hungry this Holiday season. That's so sad that happens here in the United States. So let's be thankful for what we have.

And then as Christmas approaches, let's remember the reason for the season. Without Jesus, there would be no Christmas.

Shoes In Church

One of my friends sent this to me in an email, and I wanted to share. There should NEVER be a time where someone walks into our churches, and walks out without being welcomed, not by the preacher, but by the congregation. I have personally experienced an unwelcoming feeling in nearly every church I've visited. But what if the visitor isn't a Christian? Then you've just lost your chance to show the visitor the love of God. Please read this poem:


I showered and shaved
I adjusted my tie. I got there and sat
In a pew just in time.
Bowing my head in prayer
as I closed my eyes. I saw the shoe of the man next to me
Touching my own.
I sighed.

With plenty of room on either side, I thought, 'Why must our soles touch?'
It bothered me, his shoe touching mine
But it didn't bother him much.

A prayer began: 'Our Father'
I thought, 'This man with the shoes,has no pride.
They're dusty, worn, and scratched.
Even worse, there are holes on the side!'

'Thank You for blessings,' the prayer went on.
The shoe man said a quiet 'Amen.'

I tried to focus on the prayer, but my thoughts were on his shoes again.
Aren't we supposed to look our best when walking through that door?
'Well, this certainly isn't it,' I thought, Glancing toward the floor.

Then the prayer was ended and the songs of praise began.
The shoe man was certainly loud, sounding proud as he sang.
His voice lifted the rafters
His hands were raised high.
The Lord could surely hear. The shoe man's voice from the sky.

It was time for the offering
And what I threw in was steep.
I watched as the shoe man reached
Into his pockets so deep.
I saw what was pulled out
What the shoe man put in.
Then I heard a soft 'clink' . As when silver hits tin.

The sermon really bored me
To tears, and that's no lie.
It was the same for the shoe man
For tears fell from his eyes.

At the end of the service
As is the custom here.
We must greet new visitors, And show them all good cheer.
But I felt moved somehow
And wanted to meet the shoe man.

So after the closing prayer
I reached over and shook his hand.
He was old and his skin was dark
And his hair was truly a mess.
But I thanked him for coming
For being our guest.

He said, 'My name's Charlie
I'm glad to meet you, my friend.'
There were tears in his eyes
But he had a large, wide grin.
'Let me explain,' he said
Wiping tears from his eyes.

'I've been coming here for months
And you're the first to say 'Hi.'
I know that my appearance
Is not like all the rest.
But I really do try
To always look my best.
I always clean and polish my shoes
Before my very long walk.
But by the time I get here
They're dirty and dusty, like chalk.'

My heart filled with pain
And I swallowed to hide my tears.
As he continued to apologize

The Recession Is not Over!!!

Today, U.S. federal reserve chairman Ben Bernanke said the recession is likely over. But it's easy for Mr. Bernanke to say that when he's still bringing home a paycheck every week. Tell that to the family that's still looking for a job because they got laid off. Tell that to those of us facing furloughs.
I'm sorry, Mr. Bernanke...but the recession isn't over until the unemploument rate dops by about half! Please don't give America false hope! Let's get jobs back, then we can say the recession is over.

Patrick Swayze Dies

Again I am reminded how short life really is. Today, actor Patrick Swayze died of Pancreatic cancer. He was 57. I cannot even count the times I have invited Swayze into my home through a great movie. I own the two Dirty dancing movies...I love the movie "Ghost" as well...not to mention "The Outsiders", "Road House", "Point Break". I am so saddened by his death. Even though he didn't do many movies over his career, he was one of the greats. He was a great actor, and Hollywood is better for having him there. Patrick Swayze will definitely be missed. And the sad thing to me...he never had children. So there are no other Swayze children to pass on the legacy.

Where am I going?

Some recent events in my life lately have gotten me thinking...where am I going in this life? What does life hold for me? I live everyday like many Americans right now...wondering whether I will have a job tomorrow. But there are other things I wonder about. I wonder where my personal life will take me. I'm not whining...but I feel a lot of times that I am so behind everyone. Here I am 30 years old, and I'm not anywhere near being where I want to be right now. Does anyone else feel that way? I feel stuck! I've got so many dreams...but they're stuck in my head...and I don't know how to make them come true! Stuck! That's a good word for the way I'm feeling right now. And I am so ready to get Unstuck!

Horrid Crime

I work in the news, and we so many times put up a wall so bad news doesn't affect us. But this week, a horrid crime broke my heart. Who would kill two people who have such a heart for the forgotten? That couple in Pensacola that was killed this week during a robbery...so sad...really has affected me. They had 16 children...12 were adopted...and most have disabilities. Let's pray for that family...that Jesus will hold each one of those children tight.

Pray For TV Jobs

Okay, so you've probably heard alot about construction jobs being down, or about the auto industry having a hard time. But what you haven't heard about is the television industry. It's probably because TV news is where you are hearing about other industries struggling in this economy--and we don't like to tell bad news about ourselves. But one TV company I know of has decided to enforce five percent pay cuts for all of its employees. And another TV company has went bankrupt and is now up for auction. The company I work for is not immune. We are dealing with layoffs as well. The reason? Advertising is down because other industries are struggling. So, when you're saying a prayer for others without work, pray that God will help struggling companies get back on top. Because the last thing we need is more people out of work. We need to be adding jobs in this aweful economy...not laying off more workers.

Life in Chattanooga

I have now been in Chattanooga a year. And a couple of days ago, a friend on facebook asked me what life is like here. Well, I guess there are some good things and some bad, but overall, I really do like it here.
Let's start with what I like. Chattanooga is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever lived in. It compares a lot with Greenville, which is one of the reasons I looked to come here. I loved Greenville and I hated leaving there. Downtown Chattanooga is so awesome. I love the riverfront, and the northshore. It's so awesome. And it's so people-friendly. I feel perfectly safe walking around downtown alone for the most part. And the people here are friendly, too. I've met so many people my own age, which is so awesome! I also love that there's so much to do in Chattanooga--great example this week is Riverbend. I don't know that you could ever be bored here!
And I'm in a very good working environment. I really love my job, my bosses, and most of the people I work with.
Plus--we get every season here---my favorite season is now fall. Never saw such vibrant colors until I moved here!
There are some things I don't like. I haven't yet found a church to call home. But I feel I'm getting closer. I also have to budget my money very carefully because I took a huge pay cut when I came here. So that can be very stressful, especially since I've had a lot of medical bills lately. And Tennessee has a serious bug problem. I hate mosquitos and spiders, and I seem to have to deal with those more here than anywhere I've ever lived.

So to sum it all up, I really do like Chattanooga. Life here is pretty good. I don't know if this is a permanent home yet...time will tell. What I do know is this has been a really good move for me.

Life is Hard, But God is Good

I was on the phone with a friend last night and I got to thinking about my life thus far. My life has not been easy. I've had to deal with things that many hope they'll never have to face. And I know there are many people in this world that have lived much harder lives than me. But there are lots of people that have never experienced hardship in their lives. But throughout my life, looking back, I can truly say God has kept his promise to me. He is faithful. The Bible doesn't promise you will never face hardships. Life can be really hard. But the Bible does promise that you won't have to go through it alone. He will always be there, to hold you when you need peace, offering an ear to listen, and a shoulder to cry on. Looking back on my life, there were times I never thought peace could come--but Jesus was there, giving me the peace I needed...even in the darkest times, I still had hope. I don't know who needs to hear this right now, but I just felt compelled to share. Lord knows that there have been times when I felt the darkness all around me and felt I'd never find the light. But He's always there to guide me and comfort me.

So, why do bad things happen to good people? I don't know the answer to that. I heard this analogy one time. God is your heavenly Father. And He's very much like a parent...parents can't keep their children from hurting...as much as they want to--they can't prevent them from falling and scraping their knee...but what they can do is dust them off and comfort them when they do get hurt...and help them feel better. And we've all heard the Footprints in the sand poem...that's the God I serve. He will carry you when you feel you can't take another step. "cast all your cares on Him because he cares for you."

Missing My Walks

Well, I was walking two or three times a week. It was a really good release after a long day of work. But, I had hurt my foot back in February, so since it was still giving me problems...my doctor decided to put me in a boot. So, now I have to stay off my foot for the next couple of weeks. :( But I'm trying not to complain. I've got so many things going this summer, I just want my foot to get better so I can enjoy them. I'm going to Chicago on June 19th...the following weekend, my best friend from high school and her family are coming for a visit...
then the second weekend of July, my mom is coming for a mother/daughter weekend. And a couple weeks after that, Olivia, my 13-year-old friend from Greenville will be here for a few days. So, my summer is packed full of fun and I can't wait! So, let's just get all the sicknesses out of the way...and all the pain out of the way, so I can enjoy it!

Ode to being sick

I have been stuck in the house for three days, and while one day off from work would have been nice...right now, I am so stir-crazy! Went to the doctor and they told me I had an infection. She gave me a shot in the butt, and antibiotics...and told me I had to stay home until Thursday. Gosh, I am so bored! I actually thought today might be a day to get things done around the house. I mean, I woke up feeling much better (must be the shot at work!). But I took a shower...and that took all the strength out of me. So, I went and laid down for a could of hours. Then I decided to clean the kitchen...again, had to lay down and recuperate! I haven't had a sickness knock me on my butt like this in a long time! So, the laundry I hoped to wash didn't get washed...and my floors need vaccuuming so bad (my dog is shedding really bad)...but it will all have to wait! And I had planned to volunteer Saturday at RElay For Life, but I really don't see that happening...I will have to get a lot of energy before then in order to do that. So, at least I do have the Internet...and that's kept me busy for three days, although I would do anything to be around people! Oh, the joys of living alone! Try being sick and not having anyone to help you! That's where I've been this week! Had to make myself drive to the doctor, and then to the pharmacy. It's tough living alone and being sick!

I just hope I can get enough energy to do a good job at work tomorrow...because staying home another day is not an option!

Isn't It Lovely?

As you know, one of my favorite things is a summer rain. well, it's not quite summer, but I still love the rain. Today it rained all day...and when I walked out of my job to go home for the weekend, I looked off in the distance and saw something beautiful! Isn't it lovely? THe mountains had sort of a fog around them. I just had to take some pictures of it!

We've Got to Stand For Something

Okay, bloggers, I'm back and I've got something I've just been itching to say.
How many of you saw the Miss USA pageant? Well, if you didn't see it, you probably don't even know who won. And it's not because you didn't see it, it's because the only person in the news about it has been the runner-up, Miss California, USA, Carrie Prejean. But just in case you're wondering, Miss North Carolina won. And in my opinion, she deserved to win, but it's not because Miss California had a bad answer for her question. Because I thought her answer rocked! I thought Miss North Carolina was prettier, and not as vain. And she carried herself on stage much better in my opinion. It sounded to me through the whole competition that Miss California thought she was the best thing since sliced bread. Even when she talked about her evening gown, she made the statement "i'm going to blow this one out of the park!" But the other girls just talked about why they liked their dress.

But what seems to have made headlines is something that's stupid. I mean, since when can someone not say what she thinks? THe question asked to her said "do you think other states should follow suit and make same sex marriage legal." The key word is think. But she got reemed because she didn't say the expected, vague answer. And she was accused of not being politically correct! Since when does giving your opinion equal not being PC? That's so stupid! Plus, she did give both sides of the argument, by saying we live in a country that allows you to choose, but in my family we believe marriage should be between a man and a woman. I think trying to be PC has gone way too far!

So, good for you, Carrie Prejean, for saying what you wanted to say. WE should all learn a lesson from you. We should always stand up for what we believe in, no matter what it costs us! IF you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything!

So, support those who stand up for what they believe in, whether you agree with them or not. BEcause it's important to believe in something!

I Took The Plunge

After having about 20 people in the last month ask me to join Facebook, I decided to get a page. So, look me up...and add me as a friend! I don't know how much I will keep up with it...I already have a hard enough time keeping up with this blog. But I will soon have Internet at home, which will help immensely.

Another Week Has Come and Gone...

Well, another week has come and gone. It seems the older I get, the faster life goes by. And that really makes me feel sometimes like I'm wasting my days...Here lately, I've been feeling that there's got to be a greater purpose out there for me...something that I haven't figured out yet. I guess we all toss around questions like that from time to time...

Last weekend, I had a really good trip home, even though I didn't see everyone that was on the list...I just got way too busy, and I don't think a trip home should be that stressful. So, I decided to slow down a bit...I spent several hours with my friend, Jen, and her family. She was probably ready to get rid of me when I finally left! But I just haven't been able to spend time with her, and I have really missed her lately! I also got to see my cousin, Mandy, along with my family.

This weekend, I'm going to the opera! I am so excited. I love the opera, but because of the cost, I rarely get to go. This weekend, the local university is putting one on, and it's only $7 to go. So, my friend, Stephanie, and I are going Saturday night!

well, gotta get back to work. I hope everyone is doing well. Stay safe in this weekend's bad weather!

Update

I guess everyone's really busy, because I check everyone's blogs frequently and many of you haven't updated in a while! Please update, so I can know what's going on with you!

I'm going to Gordo this weekend...really excited about that, but it's going to be a really busy trip. I'll get to visit with my friends Jennifer and Tess...and on saturday evening, my brother and his fiance, Timmy and Kylie, are coming over to the house...and then on Sunday on the way back home, I'm going to stop and have dinner with my sister, Lisa, and her husband, Jon. In the middle of all that I will visit with my mom and stepdad, and hopefully get to see my cousin, Mandy. So, it's going to be a jammed-pack weekend.

Good news about my foot...I don't have rheumatoid arthritis or gout! that's a relief! I only have inflamation, which should go away with the exercises I'm doing and the orthotics I just got in my shoe. Doctor says a combination of bad shoes and an uneven gait probably caused the problems. Now, I have new shoes as well. Can't do much about the uneven gait--i've probably had it all my life.

Undogfriendly City

Chattanooga is the least dog-friendly city that I've ever lived in! Who's ever heard of dogs not being allowed in the park? Well, most of the parks here in Chattanooga don't allow them! What's the point of boasting the great outdoors if your precious pooch can't enjoy it with you! Dogs aren't allowed on the riverwalk, they're not allowed at Tennessee Riverpark, and they're not allowed at Coolidge park! It's an outrage! I set out on Sunday to enjoy an afternoon with Casey--we first tried Tennessee Riverpark, but there are signs posted everywhere--saying no dogs! So, I decided to take a trip to Coolidge park...we walked, and I looked for signs, but there was none, so I thought I was in the clear...until a park ranger came and very nicely told me to leave! But she did tell me where we could go...Renaissance Park allows dogs...so, we got back in the car, and headed there...By that time, the afternoon was pretty much gone, but we did enjoy about an hour walk, which was well needed, since it had been raining for like 48 hours!

Chattanooga city leaders, please here us! Our dogs like to enjoy the outdoors, too!

A Rainy Weekend

Well, the good news is I am no longer sick and my foot appears to be getting better (yea!). It still hurts, but not near as bad as it has. I have to go back to the foot doctor next week.
The bad news is it's supposed to rain all weekend! I had hoped to go on a hike...just to get a little time outdoors...either at one of our national parks or at Rock City. And My dog, Casey, would have loved the walk! But it looks like I will be stuck in the house listening to the rain. :(
I'm going home to Gordo next weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing my mom and stepdad, and my friends. It will also be the first time I get to see my friend, Jennifer's, new baby boy. He was born in January. And my mom is going to help me with my taxes. Can you believe I haven't filed yet?

No Relay Team and tidbits

Well, as sad as it is, I'm not going to be able to have a team for Relay For Life. I could not get the eight people needed for a team. And that's really frustrating! Oh well! I may volunteer anyway that night.

Right now, I don't feel well. I went to bed early last night not feeling well, then today, woke up with a sore throat. I came to work today, but I feel lousy. Plan on going home tonight and going to bed early again...and on top of that, my foot and ankle have been hurting for two and a half weeks now. I went to the doctor, and there are several reasons it could be hurting...I have to go back on the 18th...

Went to South Carolina for a visit last weekend. Olivia did so good at fine arts! She made it to nationals for her piano piece and her short sermon. I'm so proud of her! I had to leave early sunday because of the impending snow. So, I didn't get to attend church. I was really sad. I got to Atlanta, and it was snowing so hard. But as soon as I made it on the other side and started working my way toward Tennessee, it stopped! We didn't get any snow in Chattanooga! :(

Relay For Life

I have always wanted to participate in Relay for Life, and this year, I am taking steps to do so. But I can't get enough people to commit to this good cause. I called the American Cancer Society today, and they told me I need eight to 15 people for my team, since someone has to be on the track at all times. I have three committed, two others that might do it. But that's only five! So, if you want to be a part of our team, please let me know!

SC Bound!

I am really excited! Next Friday (feb 27th), I'm going to Greenville for a visit. I miss everyone so much, and haven't ruled out moving back there at some point. Fine Arts competition is that weekend, and Olivia is competing. So, I will be going to Columbia with her on Saturday. But Friday and Sunday will be spent in Greenville with friends. I can't wait!

What is a Valentine?

It's time for my least favorite holiday of the year...you might say I'm a Valentines Day Scrooge. I don't like the whole concept. Why must you have a date on the calendar that tells you when to show someone you love them? You should do that all year long! To me, a valentine is someone who showers you with love 365 days of the year...not just February 14th. Don't get me wrong...when I am with someone, I do always hope for wonderful gifts on Valentines Day...but I also hope that I will have fresh flowers on my table most of the time. So, my lesson for you: love on those you love this Valentines Day, but don't forget to do the same on June 12th or March 30th or October 15th...because they deserve knowing how much you adore them everyday of the year!

Notes about our trip

Noelle and I thoroughly enjoyed our 30th birthday trip to Tucson, Arizona. We got to see the city and the desert(which was the highlight of the trip). We also got to spend time at Old Tucson Studios. If you've ever seen a western, or watched "little house on the prairie", chances are you'll recognize some of the buildings and scenery there, because many of them were shot there. The desert is beautiful...nothing like the southeast, where I live. And the weather during the winter is awesome. It was 75 degrees and sunny during the day. at night, we had to wear sleeves...it dropped to about 40 degrees. The food there was amazing! We had Mexican, Southwestern, Jewish, Greek, and Italian food during our stay. And the people were very hospitable. I would recommend this trip to anyone, but go in the winter! I hear it gets plum miserable during the summer!

Tomorrow night, I head to Nashville. I will spend the night there and catch a plane the next morning for Tucson, Arizona! I am so excited, I can barely contain myself! My friend, Noelle, is meeting me there and we will be staying until Monday! We are staying at the most awesome hotel--The Westin La Paloma Resort www.westinlapalomaresort.com.
It's going to be such a relaxing trip. I am looking forward to some downtime with one of my best friends! We plan to attend dillinger days, which is a street festival they're having downtown. We also plan to go to Old Tucson Studios...and we are going to go hiking in one of the national parks there. I will definately post pictures once I get back!

Thinking of Robbie

Over the past few days, I've been thinking about my brother, Robbie, a lot. Robbie died after a long battle with Leukemia 12 years ago. The anniversary of his death was Friday. There's still sadness when I think about losing my brother at such an early age. Robbie and I were very close. He was three years younger than me, and we had our fights just like any siblings, but at the end of the day, we loved each other very much. He died my senior year of high school, when he was only 15.

Robbie would be 27 years old now, and I find myself wondering what he would be like. More than likely, he would be married, because he always had girls following him around...and always a couple on his arm. I don't know what he would have decided to do as a career. But I do know that he and I would still be close today.

I have questioned God a lot in the past...why would He take Robbie away from us after such a short time? But as much as I've grieved over the past 12 years, and as much as my family has grieved, I have to trust the Lord. I know I wouldn't be the person I am today without facing my brother's death. I also know that God helped me through those rough times, and sent friends to help me through it. I had some really good friends during my brother's fight with cancer, and when he died.

I know that he is in Heaven, waiting on us to join him. He loved the Lord with all his heart. But it doesn't make us on earth miss him any less. I still tear up when I think about him...even after 12 years.

So, as I think about him, I just want to say, "I love you, Robbie, and I'll see you on the other side."

Auld Lang Syne

As I sit and think about the end of 2008 and a new beginning in 2009, I am glad for the chance to start again. 2007 was a wonderful year for me, and as I entered 2008, I just knew it was going to be a great year. I had vowed to lose the extra weight I seem to have carried all my life, and become a much healthier person. I had also vowed to travel more, and I made a list of about five places I wanted to visit.
But 2008 was a year of hardship, of heartache, and of moving on. I didn't lose the weight. I didn't travel more, and I spent most of the year trying to be happy again. I had a really bad breakup, and had to move because with a new boss, my job went sour.

So, the New Year has me thinking about the words of the famous new year's song "Auld Lang Syne". If you don't know the words, here they are:

So, should we forget the days that have gone by? Sometimes I think yes, but other times, I think no. Because if you forget where you've been, then you can't learn anything for the future.
So, as you enter the New Year, Thank God for where you've been, and the trials He's brought you through. Because we're still standing today, despite the things that have happened, or the people that seek to destroy us. And look forward to the New Year, and the new beginnings. Because the coming year, 2009, is going to be great! I just know it!

Working on Christmas

I've been in the Television business since 2002, and since 2002, I've had to work every Christmas, except for one. I didn't work last Christmas, and that was a gift in itself to be able to be with my family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

This year, I sit inside the newsroom at Channel three in Chattanooga, and I wish I could be home with my family. My mom passed around the phone this morning and I talked to all my family at her house...my mom, stepdad, grandmother, my sister and her husband, my brother and his fiance. And it was great just getting to hear their voices.

But for the first time I actually enjoy the people I'm spending Christmas with. The people I work with here are so great, and I have actually enjoyed today, even though I've had to work. The crew that's working today are the "newby's"...all of us don't have the seniority, so we have to work while others get the holiday off. It's the nature of the business, the news must go on.

But we're not the only ones...I went into Waffle House today, and those poor people were so busy! It seems everyone went to get a late breakfast at Waffle House this morning...there were so many people in there, and I found myself feeling sorry for the people working there. At least my job isn't as demanding as there's today. Holidays are usually pretty easy in the news business. So, thank you waffle house workers for making my food today.

I say all of this to say--enjoy your time with your family and friends this holiday season...and Thank God for all the time you get to spend with them. Because there are some who can't be with their families on the holidays...as for me, I'm heading to see family tonight.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

I haven't blogged in a while. Things have been so busy, Christmas has really snuck up on me this year. I'm working today and tomorrow, as I usually have to do. It's the curse of being a tv news producer. But I do get to go home for the weekend and see my family.

I called my mom today. She says everyone's coming over for the annual Christmas Eve celebration...the celebration that I have missed every year, except for last year. It's really sad...I always feel like I'm on the outside. Mom says they're having hordouvers...and exchanging gifts.

I'll work tomorrow, then head to my dad's home, which is really close--about an hour away. I will celebrate Christmas with him and my stepmom tomorrow night...
then I'll head to my mom's in Gordo on Friday morning, where I will get to spend Christmas weekend with my mom, stepdad, grandmother, and probably my brother, Timmy, and his fiance. Lisa and Jon probably won't be there, but I hope that changes.

I'm looking forward to the time at home...

I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas...
I hope Santa treats everyone good, and don't forget while you're opening presents to celebrate Jesus' birthday, too. After all, He's the reason for the season!

Look What I got!

I'm so excited! I got my first smart phone! It's a Blackjack II from Samsung. I absolutely love it, but it's taking me some time to figure out how it works! It's almost smarter than me!

Turning 30

So, tomorrow I turn the big 3-0. And it's been really sad for me. I mean, today is the last day of my 20s. I guess leaving behind decades is sad, because that's the last 10 years of your life! And you look back at all you wanted to accomplish, and it didn't happen.
But the good thing is that it kind of gives you a fresh start--a new beginning to do all the things you want to do.
I got an email from my dear friend, Noelle, today. She also turns 30 soon. Her birthday is in March, and she and I are going to Tucson together next month to celebrate. She lives in San Francisco area, so it will be great to see her.

She really put turning 30 it in perspective for me. here's an excerpt:

"Enjoy 30! If you think 30 is bad, wait till we get to 50 (; Not looking forward to 50. Don't really feel much older as I approach 30....I guess I could be upset...but I was at a conference for the past two days in the City....I had to walk to BART from the conference and was surrounded by disabled people...people talking to themselves...panhandlers....and an old homeless guy sleeping in his wheelchair in the BART station underground because it's so cold outside right now in the Bay Area. We really have so much to be thankful for.....a trip to the City keeps things in perspective."

So, as I turn 30, I really want to think about what I want my life to be like for the next 10 years. I want to enjoy life more. I want to meet more people, and make new friends. I want to hopefully find a wonderful man to marry, and have beautiful children. I want to stay put--and quit moving around so much. I want to travel more (for pleasure), and see places I've never seen. I begin that with Tucson...I went when I was a little girl, but I don't remember anything. So, I can't wait to see the southwest.

I'm not working for the rest of the week, so I will update next week.

A Week Away, Advice Needed

I am exactly a week away from the dreaded 30. I turn 30 on December 11th. I am, however, looking forward to some time off. I am off that Thursday and Friday. I was planning on going to Nashville, but because I couldn't find anyone that wanted to go with me...I decided I'm going to stick around here.

So, I'm looking for tips on how to survive turning 30. For those of you that have already hit that milestone...please send me those tips, whether they be humorous or serious, I want to know!

Happy Family News

I got the best phone call last night. My brother, Timmy, has been dating Kylie for a couple years now. Well, Kylie called me last night to tell me Timmy had proposed! So, they're getting married in October! I am so happy for them! I liked Kylie from the beginning, and I told Timmy not to let her get away! So, I am so glad that they are getting married! And Timmy even thought of a clever way to propose! I'm so proud of him!

Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus

I just love Christmas. It's just so magical! And the belief of Santa Claus has a lot to do with that.

I went to the East Ridge Christmas parade last Saturday night. I decided to go, even though I didn't have anyone to go with. And I am so glad I did. I ended up standing next to a man and his seven-year-old daughter. It was so much fun watching the parade with this little girl. She just watched the parade with awe. But it was a long parade. And about halfway through, she began to get antsy. So, I told her that she needed to watch, because Santa Claus hadn't come by yet. Here's the conversation that followed:

girl: Santa Claus is going to be in the parade?

Me: Didn't you know Santa comes to all the Christmas parades?

girl: The real Santa?

Me: Of course! Is there any other?

So, she got so excited and watched the rest of the parade...and as predicted, Santa came riding in on a fire truck to greet all of the children.

It reminds me of another little girl, who's letter to the editor of the New York Sun has become quite popular. Eight-Year-Old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote the letter, and a quick response was printed in 1897.

Here's the letter and response:

DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.' "Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Thank God for All His Provisions

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and although I have to work tomorrow and Friday, I just have to say I've got a lot to be thankful for. I'm thankful I have a job, because there are many people in the world right now wondering where their next paycheck will come from. And I am thankful I will get to go home and spend some time with my family this weekend.

I'm thankful for friends. My new friends, Stephanie and Neville, have invited me to spend Thanksgiving evening with them, so I won't be alone. I think that's so nice of them.

I'm thankful for sunrises and sunsets...and the chance to live each day.

Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas

So, it used to be Happy Thanksgiving for the month of November, then Merry Christmas for the month of December. But it's changed, and silly me, I'm still trying to hold on to my traditions. I've been hearing about folks who have already decorated for Christmas, and my thought it, good grief! Celebrate one holiday at a time! Then, one of the radio stations here went to all Christmas music this week. I couldn't believe it! Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas, but I am afraid if we celebrate for too long, it will no longer be special...



So, I tried to hold off and not listen to the Christmas music. But somehow, my radio dial has made it to that station. And I've learned that Christmas music makes me really happy! So, I just left it there for now. As for decorating, I plan to start the process this weekend. I don't know if I'll do inside and out, but I will get it started. I usually wait until the day after Thanksgiving to put up the tree. But Thanksgiving is a week late this year. And I have to work Thanksgiving and the day after. I will be in Gordo visiting my family that weekend. So, I'm going to go ahead and break tradition and put it up.

So, Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas--all wrapped into one.

Weekend at Daddy's

This weekend, I am going to see my dad and stepmom. My dad called me about an hour ago, telling me he was home, and wanted to know if I would come. It turned out to be good timing, because I've been feeling a bit lonely this week. I've been sick most of the week, so I haven't had much contact with people, and I just miss my family. So, for anyone that might try to call me this weekend, I will be out of cell phone range until Sunday night. Yeah, my dad's is one of the few places on earth that has lousy cell phone coverage...he lives way out in the boondocks, right on Lake Weiss. But that's not so bad. It gives you a chance to relax from all the hustle and bustle of this world.

A Wonderful Weekend

Valerie got here about 7:00 Friday night, and we pretty much went nonstop all weekend.

We went to Rock City, and we went downtown and to the North shore.
We ate in a wonderful Italian restaurant, called Tony's, in the art district.

We had a great time. I can't wait until she comes back. I hope it's soon!

A Special Visit

I am so excited! Nearly 15 years ago, I went to Camp Smile-A-Mile as a counselor for the first time. My brother had been diagnosed with cancer not long before, and I decided to be a counselor at the camp he had grown to love. So, I went, scared, not knowing what to expect. When I got there, I met a very special young lady. Valerie was seven-years-old when I first met her. And she and I instantly hit it off. After that year, I was her counselor every summer until she became a teenager and moved on to the teen cabin. I, of course, stayed with the little kids. But Valerie and I were able to stay close all these years. When I lived in Huntsville, I got the chance to visit with her a lot, since she only lived an hour from there. But since I moved, I haven't seen her that much. However, we stayed in touch.

Well, Valerie, I am happy to say, is all grown up now, and cancer free! And, this weekend, she is coming to visit me here in Chattanooga! I am so excited, I can barely contain myself. When you go to these camps, you tell yourself not to get too close, because they're all sick. But Valerie grabbed my heart on the first day. I am so glad she did! So, I am looking forward to my weekend visit with Valerie--just a month from when she graduates from college!

History in the Making

It's history in the making! Barack Obama will be the first African-American president of the United States come January. I have to be truthful. I never liked Barack. I was a Hillary Clinton and a John Edwards fan. If you look at some previous posts, you can see me when I met John Edwards. And I never liked John McCain, either, but his running-mate, Sarah Palin, intrigued me. With all that said, at this time, I am happy with the country's choice. And I'm even happier that Obama not only won the electoral college, but he also won the popular vote. That doesn't always happen. I always wondered how you could elect someone president that didn't win the popular vote. But it's happened in recent history.
So, as we wait and see what the future holds, I just hope it's "change we can believe in", like Obama has preached his whole campaign. I want to see the economy get better. I want to see wars end, and peace across the world. I want to see an America that we can be proud of. An America that the world respects. So, as Obama and runningmate, Joe Biden, take office in January, no matter your political affiliation, or who you voted for, let's pray for our new leaders. Let's pray the Lord guides their steps as they lead our country.
